Mountaineers, rejoice: India will, for the first time, allow foreign climbers to scale more than 100 high-altitude peaks this summer in the Himalayan state of Kashmir.

Officials said the move was an effort to boost the scenic region's ailing tourism industry, hit by two decades of separatist rebellion. Officials say 60% of Kashmiris are dependent on tourism. Kashmir was once dubbed the Switzerland of the east. It was once a mecca for climbers, skiers, honeymooners and film-makers drawn to the state's soaring peaks, fruit orchards and timber houseboats bobbing on Dal Lake in Srinagar, the summer capital. But the number of visitors began falling after a revolt broke out in 1989 that has killed more than 47,000 people so far.

The peaks to be opened for trekking and mountaineering are situated at an altitude ranging from 3,000 metres to 7,800 metres, mostly in the Eastern Karakoram mountain range of Ladakh. "This summer 104 peaks in Ladakh region will open for trekking and expeditions which would pave the way for adventure tourism and attract foreign tourists in a big way," Nawang Rigzin Jora, Kashmir's tourism minister, told Reuters.

"The defence ministry, which had earlier expressed reservation on throwing open the peaks, has given its nod." The mountainous Ladakh region along India's border with Pakistan and China, which has been largely free of rebel violence, is a heavily militarised zone. "The situation is fast improving in the state and tourism is picking up, we hope a very good (tourist) season ahead," Jora added.

The strategic National Highway-22 (NH), which connects Manali town in Himachal Pradesh to Leh in Jammu and Kashmir, has been reopened for light vehicles after it was closed due to landslides on August 6th.

As some stretch of the highway between Upshi and Rumptse in Ladakh region is still under landslides, only small vehicles are allowed to ply at the moment. It will take some more days for the heavy vehicles to operate on the highway. The 222 km stretch of the highway between Manali and Sarchu was already made motorable in the first week of August for all type of vehicles.

However, Dev Raj Sharma, the senior manager of the Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (HPTDC) said that the bus service on the Manali-Leh segment would be resumed only after the highway is made motorable for heavy vehicles.

The Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (HPTDC) currently operates a luxury bus service on this route. A cloudburst occurred at Choglamsar village on August 6th, which is situated above Leh town, causing flash floods and mudslides that washed away government offices, paramilitary camps and residential homes.

In order to woo more number of tourists, Jammu and Kashmir’s major tourism spot, Yousmarg will now undergo a facelift and modernization work.  Work is on to beautify an irrigation canal, build rain shelters and set up tourist huts to facilitate travellers.

"We have made some tourist huts, and we have provided sanitation facilities. We have also improved and developed an irrigation canal that passes through the area. There has been an overall modernization of the area. We have also made some more view points and spots," said Rafi Ahmad, Deputy Commissioner, Budgam District.
The beautification work is bound to increase the influx of tourists to Yousmarg that is not only a favourite haunt of Indian film makers but also among small children who frequently visit this place. About 80 percent of the population of the area is directly or indirectly dependent on the tourism trade.

Yousmarg, a small meadow located 50 kilometers away from Srinagar is well-known for having some unique spring flowers and also boasts of having some of the highest peaks in PirPanjal range like Tatakoti 4725 mtrs and Sunset Peak 4746 meters. The mighty river Doodh Ganga makes this destination even more exciting. For adventure lovers, the natural slopes of Yousmarg offer skiing opportunity.
